Project1: In Your Eyes

Girl in Bath, Saul Steinberg, Romania

That not means bored.

Famed worldwide for giving graphic definition to the postwar age, Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) had one of the most remarkable careers in American art. While renowned for the covers and drawings that appeared in The New Yorker for nearly six decades, he was equally acclaimed for the drawings, paintings, prints, collages, and sculptures he exhibited internationally in galleries and museums.

Steinberg crafted a rich and ever-evolving idiom that found full expression through these parallel yet integrated careers. Such many-leveled art, however, resists conventional critical categories. “I don’t quite belong to the art, cartoon or magazine world, so the art world doesn’t quite know where to place me,” he said.  He was a modernist without portfolio, constantly crossing boundaries into uncharted visual territory. In subject matter and styles, he made no distinction between high and low art, which he freely conflated in an oeuvre that is stylistically diverse yet consistent in depth and visual imagination.

I enjoy his work because he has play them very naturally with the environment. He cleverly used the inconspicuous objects to combine with outlined illustrations perfectly.I supposed that because his observation was always sensitive than normal people so that he could find the characteristics of each object. His work always have a large scale so that it could be quite attractive if there was a big illustration in the room. That is what I could learn from Steinberg's work.

Other Famous Work From Saul Steinberg

Brush Girl, Christoph Niemann, German

Play with the illustration and photograph is really funny.

Christoph Niemann is an illustrator, artist, and author. His work has appeared on the covers of  The New Yorker,  WIRED and The New York Times Magazine and has won awards from AIGA, the Art Directors Club and The Lead Awards. His corporate clients include Google, St. Moritz, LAMY, and The Museum of Modern Art. He is a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale. In 2010, he was inducted into the Art Directors Club Hall Of Fame.

He has drawn live from the Venice Art Biennale, the Olympic Games in London, and he has sketched the New York City Marathon — while actually running it. He created The New Yorker’s first Augmented Reality Cover as well as a hand drawn 360 degree VR animation for the magazine’s US Open issue.

Niemann is the author of many books, including the monograph  “Sunday Sketching” (2016), “WORDS” (2016) and “Souvenir” (2017). With Nicholas Blechman he published the book “Conversations“. With Jon Huang he created the kids’ apps PETTING ZOO and CHOMP. His work is subject of an episode of Abstract, a new original NETFLIX series.

Niemann's work have lots of similarities with the work from Saul Steinberg. Both of them are talented on the combination of illustration and photograph. But Niemann's work has shown a kind of development of Saul's. He used digital drawing on the photos and then edited them to a video. This would be difficult to make because the designer need to consider about the movement of the image.

Creative Double Exposure Photography, Andreas Lie, Norway

The Reflection Between Each Other

Andreas Lie is a talented artist from Bergen, Norway. The place he lives influenced him a lot because the environment here was really original and uninhabited. Wild mountains and rivers around Andreas and reflect on the style his art work every day. He used his talented photography skills to record the nature and wild animals around his life and mixed them together with double exposure. These pictures have told us the reflection between the environment and creatures. He showed the inseparable connection between them and at the same time they noticed us that we need to pay attention to the protection and respection of the nature even the whole planet.

I really admire the living environment around him. Although I don't have a chance to close to the nature now but his interesting style of photography is worth studying.

Ice Cream, Jose Lourenco, Portugal

Perfect Colour Controlling

Jose Lourenco is a artist from Portugal. I am not very familiar with him because I have just found his work from a URL link by coincidence. But his work has given me a fresh and clean feeling because of his colour using. I was appealed to his creative Ice Cream Album because it is quite inspirational and unique. Jose imagined that the colours on the pen is like the ice cream which is also very colourful.

I looked through his Instagram page and I found that his work has a very similar style which was about colour using. And also his composition of the picture was interesting. He could manage the random objects to a particular shape. That makes them looked tidy and clean.

Some Interesting Posters Designed by WWF Organization

The connection between human and wildlife has been shown cleverly.

It can be called the most successful posters design organization.

WWF is the world’s leading independent conservation organisation. Their mission is to create a world where people and wildlife can thrive together.

To achieve their mission, they are finding ways to help transform the future for the world’s wildlife, rivers, forests and seas; pushing for a reduction in carbon emissions that will avoid catastrophic climate change; and pressing for measures to help people live sustainably, within the means of our one planet.

The first time their poster design attracted me was about four years ago when I was studied in my high school. I was really impressed by their work because every single poster they created had a extremely strong visualizations and all of them could convey a powerful sense to each audience. Their mission is protect wild animal and stop climate change badly so most of their posters were linked to creatures or the Earth. some people killed animal for money or other use so that always be their point of entry. They combined them smartly and let the audience realize how their actions is violent to the wildlife. I really enjoyed their poster design and they gave me a lot of inspirations about how to show the implied meaning of the main character on the poster.

Mniature Calendar, Tanaka Tatsuya, Japan

Success belongs to the persevering.

Since April 2011, art director and photographer Tatsuya Tanaka’s imagination has built a magnificent number of miniature worlds. Through the artist’s clever lens, everyday activities like construction work, walking the dog, getting a parking ticket, and plowing through a blizzard become delight-inducing scenarios. Tanaka also plays with pop culture references, building staple skyscrapers for Godzilla to prowl.

You can see more from Tanaka’s ongoing Miniature Calendar project on Instagram, where he shares his creations each and every day. With over two thousand scenes and counting, he has garnered an impressive followership of a million people. In August, Tanaka also released a book of his work, Small Wonders – Life Portrait in Miniature.

Tanaka's calendar is a world-famous art work. From 2011, He designed thousands of interesting pictures and creative photographs til now and his work has inspired many designers in the world. I am glad to see he still creating new picture everyday and his perseverance is the big reason of his success.I think his amazing pictures can not only be used on calendar design but also the cover of magazines or some poster for brands. I hope this inspiration can be develop in more different fields in design. In this project I will create some scenery by myself and its effect will be like Tanaka's work.

Half Move Pictures, Romain Laurent, America

Move? Move!

French photographer and director Romain Laurent started making portrait-based GIFs as a way to produce work outside his commercial jobs, a spontaneous project that would encourage him to produce consistently for himself rather than clients. Each GIF is simple in its concept—a snap of the finger, a twist of the hand—yet is elegant in its composition of muted colors and subjects often centered squarely in the frame. Although GIFs often incorporate the whole subject, Laurent’s work highlights one or two specific movements, isolating gestures rather than animating the whole image.

Laurent studied product design at the National School of Applied Arts in Paris before realizing photography was his medium of choice. Laurent nows works in New York City and has collaborated with clients such as Reebok, Hermes, Lacoste, Nissan, Google, and GQ.

Hermes-Man on the move, Romain Laurent, America

Because of the interests of Romain's work so I searched his own website(http://www.romain-laurent.com) and I found his commercial video was really amazing too. He used to time freezing to change the model's clothes os that it looks more active and inspirational.

Project3: The Textures of Nature

Paper cuts GIF, Wilhelm Staehle, America

Movable Paper Cuts

Wilhelm Staehle is a horribly disfigured gentleman who often frightens small children when passing by. While hermitting himself in his sprawling estate on the western coast of the Americas, he divides his free time between sporting for fox hunters and dressing his broad collection of taxidermy. He also finds time to craft silhouettes. He begs you to enjoy them. Or at least refrain from informing him if you do not.

This American paper cutting artist is really talented on his profession. He always inspires by the children around him because he believed that the children could bring more inspirations to him. His movable paper cut designs always have a interesting visualization. He used the contrast between the patterns and the background cleverly and the image is like a shadow so it also could bring a dreamlike feeling to the audience.

These are some interesting work from Wilhelm I have found from the Internet. The pictures are shown under this text box. I realized that he like doing the paper cuts based on some particular photographs so that the coulourful background could have a reflection with the single-coloured paper cuts. And also there is a connotative relationship between the picture and the paper cuts. His work always brought fun to the children and also the adults as well.

Simply unfold it for reading and standing for display. Eloisa Cartonera had turned trash into publishing house. While they made book covers with discarded cardboard , they are making environmental action as well.

Spirit of An Eagle, Jo Chorny

The Nature Is In Our Hand

Jo Chorny is a famous photographer and he create art by cutting paper with a scalpel.

His favourite way of photographing his papercuts is to hold them against the sky; He love the dramatic effect this gives, and the variation of colours and textures in the sky as a backdrop. Plus this way the audience can see his intricate cutting more clearly.

He also like the shadows that his pieces cast. He normally set them in a box frame, so the shadow appears on the back giving the papercut a great 3-D effect.

The Shit Book, Halbye Kaag JWT, Denmark

The Shit Came Out Now

Halbye Kaag JWT is not a famous artist in the world. But his interesting publication design The Shit Book has impressed me a lot. It was like an album of the shit on the street. They looked quite disgusting at the first time I found it. But actually it is a social problem in our society now in fact. After watching the video of this book I understood the intention of the designer. What he wanted to do is that using these uncomfortable pictures to notice people about this social problem. Although it looks dirty and disgusting, some one needs to clean them every day as well.

I also want to design something like that. It could use the picture to tell the meaning to the audience without many words. This is my rule and intention of Unit 7.

Project 4: Existence

About Gray Whale

The gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) is a baleen whale that migrates between feeding and breeding grounds yearly. It reaches a length of 14.9 meters (49 ft), a weight of 36 tonnes (40 short tons), and lives between 55 and 70 years. The common name of the whale comes from the gray patches and white mottling on its dark skin. Gray whales were once called devil fish because of their fighting behavior when hunted. The gray whale is the sole living species in the genus Eschrichtius, which in turn is the sole living genus in the family Eschrichtiidae. This mammal descended from filter-feeding whales that appeared at the beginning of the Oligocene, over 30 million years ago.

The gray whale is distributed in an eastern North Pacific (North American) population and a critically endangered western North Pacific (Asian) population. North Atlantic populations were extirpated (perhaps by whaling) on the European coast before AD 500 and on the American coast around the late 17th to early 18th centuries. However, on May 8, 2010, a sighting of a gray whale was confirmed off the coast of Israel in the Mediterranean Sea, leading some scientists to think they might be repopulating old breeding grounds that have not been used for centuries. In May and June 2013 a gray whale was sighted off the coast of Namibia – the first confirmed in the Southern Hemisphere. The round-trip journey of one gray whale has set a new record for the longest mammal migration, covering a distance of more than 22,000 kilometres across the Pacific Ocean. Her migration has shown new insight into how endangered species are making drastic changes in their life style.

The natural enemies of adult grey whales are humans and killer whales. After the grey whale breeding area was discovered by humans in 1857, the grey whales there were over-hunted and almost extinct. As the number of whales decreased, the number of whales slowly recovered, but after the emergence of ships in the 20th century, the number of whales decreased again. Grey Whale began to be protected by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in 1949 and has not encountered any large-scale hunters.
The small-scale hunting of gray whales started from then on, but the original Chukchi peninsula in northeastern Russia was full of gray whale with summers. The behavior of whale watching has become increasingly serious, and the world is gradually paying attention to gray whale. Anti-hunting whale people have stopped the hunting of gray whale.
By 2001, the number of gray whale populations in California returned to about 26,000. By 2004, the number of grey whales in the Western Pacific (near the South Korea, Japan, and the Kamchatka Sea) was estimated to be 101.

Narwhal, Michelle Malréchauffé, Uruguay

Before It Is Too Late.

Michelle Malréchauffé is a young graphic designer who comes from Uruguay. Although she is around 25 but her work is so mature and professional. I looked through her Instagram and found this interesting typeface deign for endangered animals. I thought it would give me some good idea for this project. She designed each letter for an endangered animal whose name is begin with this letter. She has said that 36days is a project that invites designers, illustrators and graphic artists to give their particular view on the signs from our alphabet making one each day. We love animals but we aren't aware of how our daily actions are causing their extinction. For this edition my idea is to illustrate endangered species from A to Z and create awareness of the spectacular creatures that surround us before is too late.

36 Days of Type

Man-Bowl, Barbara Daniels, Ireland

Sarcasm is a good way to warn.

Imagine our modern society with the roles of humans and animals reversed. What would it look like? How would it feel to be dominated by another species? There are the questions Barbara has asked herself everyday. She said her current artwork strives to answer these questions, drawing inspiration from real world situations and events. Since graduating in 2005 with a fine art degree from GMIT in Galway, Ireland, She have never stopped striving to be a master of my craft. She thoroughly research the ideas presented in her art and her careful attention to detail is a painstaking labour of love.

Her amazing caricatures has influenced me a lot because she tried to use her illustrations to let people think how should we to treat  animals. These caricatures just used black and white but they showed a very clear meaning and intention which the artist want to give to us. I think I have to use my design to let the audience think about the topic for this project as well.

Adorable Animals, Mirim Seo, America

Detailed Making Process of the Product

Consciousness Need To Be Develop From Young Age

Mirim Seo is an artist and designer creating artwork in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly manner. Her graphics, paintings, and products are inspired by her personal interactions with nature, sustainability, animals, embroidery, and vintage. They are characterized by a strong interest in materials and craft with a minimal aesthetic.

She earned her MFA in Graphic and Interactive Design from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University and went on to work at Anthropologie as a Brand Artist and Graphic Designer, gaining extensive experience in design and marketing. She also published an educational hand-sewing kit, SEW Spectacular: Adorable Animals by Chronicle Books in 2016.

Her amazing toy design Adorable Animals was a good puzzle game for children because it not only practices the child's sewing skills but also develops their consciousness of the wild animal protection. I really want to design a thing like that which could be funny but also meaningful.

Special Sashimi, Mirim Seo, America

This is another work from Mirim Seo which was a book design. This book shows the real events of the Japanese killing dolphins. Through these hand-sewn and hand-painted sashimi, I hope to save those marine creatures that have been killed innocently. I was shocked by her unique idea that using cloth to make a publication. She used a cute way to present a violent truth which is a good way that I can learn from in the further process.
